Named after the Acorn Woodpecker bird that is native to this area and lives in a cooperative environment with young birds (both male and female) helping care for the very young, Helpers in the Nest is an educational and community service program for older children and young adults that provides assistance to families with young children in Riverview West Neighborhood. Trainees are introduced to child health, safety, and care basics as well as to learning how to lead small groups for fun and educational activities. Trainees are also introduced to basics of family care: how to treat stains and do laundry, how to properly handle food and basic food preparation, and how to manage multiple schedules simultaneously. In order to graduate from the training component and become a certified Helper, one must also earn current CPR (Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation) and AED (Automated External Defibrillator) certification as well as Teen CERT (Community Emergency Response Team) certification. Once trainees have completed the training program and have been CPR, AED, and Teen CERT certified, and have completed the required number of trainee community service hours, he/she is then certified as a Helper in the Nest and eligible to receive pay for child and family care work acquired through Riverview West Neighborhood.
Being that this is both an educational program as well as a community service program, the fees charged to Riverview West Neighborhood clients are at a reduced rate. The mission of the Helpers in the Nest program is to equip young adults with life skills, work experience, community service certification, and letters of recommendation for college and job opportunities as well as to assist the families of Riverview West Neighborhood by providing high-quality and affordable child and family care.
