Active Shooter: A Real Threat

On December 31, 2019, this past New Year's Eve, my parents (residents of Riverview West Neighborhood) were caught in an "active shooter" situation while visiting my cousin and her new baby at her home in nearby Costa Mesa. My parents (in their 70's) were trapped inside my cousin's home while the police and SWAT team worked at containing the shooter with a blockade as he barricaded himself inside a random victim's home - just a couple doors down from my cousin's home. My mom, anxious to get to another family member's New Year's party, kept trying to leave the home but was repeatedly yelled out by the SWAT team to lock herself inside my cousin's home. Fortunately, the only person who was actually physically injured was only the shooter (though he did shoot at a couple of women and police officers). Unfortunately, the potential for experiencing an active shooter incident in our community is real, whether at home or while out and about in nearby areas.
For those of us who live in Santa Ana, a city known for having substantial gang activity, it seems even more essential for private citizens to prepare themselves and their loved ones for how to navigate an active shooter incident. Similar to other emergency or disaster events, those who are better prepared prior to an event tend to be more resilient than those who aren't. Be prepared.
